As we looked around for GOLFBUDDY’s booth, the PGA Show app pointed us towards Golfzon. We found them tucked away in the back, with a little indentation of the Golfzon footprint taken out for GOLFBUDDY’s displays. Their placement made much more sense to us later, where during our research, we learned Golfzon acquired GOLFBUDDY back in January of 2019.
As we quickly dropped by, asked what was new and then left, we didn’t realize we had stumbled on some fairly big and mostly unreported news. GOLFBUDDY (and in turn, Golfzon) had partnered with South Korean technology giant Samsung to come out with a special edition of their new Galaxy Active2 watch.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 Golf Edition
GOLFBUDDY just released the aim W10 last May, and as far as its wearable lineup is concerned, it is still GOLFBUDDY’s flagship watch. Partnering with Samsung, however, brings the Galaxy smartwatch name recognition and compatibility of the Tizen operating system to the table, which is a big deal. Samsung introduced its latest fitness tracker watch, the Galaxy Active early in 2019, followed six months later by the Active2. CNET did a nice writeup on it in September. There have been whispers around the Internet that a golf version was in the works, and it seems the rumors are true. Released in South Korea only a couple of days ago,1 the information we got at the show suggest the US release won’t be far behind.
The Golf Edition will come with the SMART CADDIE app and not require the additional subscription fee that you would have to pay if you bought the regular Active2. The watch will connect via Bluetooth with your smartphone (compatible with both Android and iOS) and will provide your location using the device’s GPS functionality. It has a rubber strap with holes for better breathability, comes in Aqua Black or Pink Gold, and a 40mm or 44mm size.
A quick note about the price: The Korean Samsung site lists the 40mm at just under $300, after conversion from KRW, and around $330 for the 44mm size. The GOLFBUDDY rep told us at the show the price would be $369, but they didn’t mention different sizes or pricing. Since the price for the regular version of the Active2 40mm is $249 on both the US site and the Korean site, I would guess the US pricing for the Golf Edition will be similar to the Korean pricing, and not the $369 mentioned at the show. We will have to wait and see.
Launch: March 6, 2020.
My full-time job has always been in the IT world, but I’ve also spent the better part of a decade writing product reviews and helping cover large industry-only trade shows. It was only in the latter part of 2019 that I put two and two together and realized I should be doing the same thing for something I’ve loved my whole life — golf. This is the culmination of a hobby that started as a child, a hobby that turned into a passion as an adult, and finally a passion that turned into The Golden Ferret.
